140 years Musée Lycklama in Cannes - Cannes

Over 1,200 people attended the official opening of the Musée Lycklama, on Sunday April 14th, 1878.
Freshly installed on the ground floor of the new town hall of the Ville de Cannes, the museum was one of only few antiquity museums in the world, and also displayed medieval and modern Oriental art.
Tinco Lycklama's private museum was founded in Beetsterzwaag, in the municipality of Gemeente Opsterland (NL), in 1871. Lycklama moved his museum to Cannes in 1872. Five years later, he donated his collections to the city of Cannes, in gratitude for the climate that restored his physical health and for the warm welcome he had enjoyed from the city and its citizens.
The inauguration of the Musée Lycklama marks the birth of the city's first municipal museum.
Hundred-forty years later, we will document the creation of Lycklama's museum. A little prelude to the temporary return this summer of Lycklama's collections to his native Beetsterzwaag - for the first time since 1872.
